Unnasty is the world's first directory dedicated to restaurants that cook without any industrial food chemicals — seed oils, MSG, artificial colours, trans fats, synthetic preservatives, and more.
The Science
The science is increasingly clear. Here's why millions of people are eliminating industrial food chemicals from their diets.
Seed oils are extracted using hexane solvents, high-heat refining, bleaching, and deodorising. Artificial additives are synthesised in chemical plants. None of this belongs in food.
Seed oils are extremely high in linoleic acid (omega-6), which competes with omega-3s. Modern diets have a 20:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio — far from the ancestral 4:1.
Polyunsaturated fats in seed oils oxidise rapidly when heated, producing aldehydes linked to inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and cellular damage.
Seed oils, MSG, and artificial additives are in 99% of restaurant food — often unlabelled. Finding restaurants that avoid all of them is nearly impossible without a directory like ours.
Emulsifiers like carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate 80 disrupt the gut microbiome. Artificial sweeteners alter insulin response. These are not inert ingredients.
Many of these ingredients are banned in the EU, Canada, and Australia but still legal in the US and elsewhere. 'Generally recognised as safe' is not the same as safe.
Zero Tolerance List
No restaurant in our directory uses any of these ingredients — in any dish, sauce, dressing, marinade, or cooking process. This is not a partial list. It is a complete ban.

What We Approve
Humans have cooked with these fats for thousands of years. Our grandparents used them. Our bodies know what to do with them.
How It Works
We don't take restaurants at their word. Every listing requires documented proof, a manual review, and a verification call before going live.
The restaurant owner fills out our detailed application form, listing all cooking fats used, confirming no nasty ingredients are used in any dish, and selecting the types of proof they can provide.
Our team reviews all submitted documentation: supplier invoices, ingredient lists, menu documentation, chef statements, or third-party certifications. We check for all banned ingredients — not just seed oils.
We schedule a brief 15-minute call with the restaurant owner or head chef to confirm their practices, ask follow-up questions, and explain our ongoing compliance requirements.
Once verified, the restaurant appears in our directory with the Unnasty Verified badge. Their documentation is kept on file for ongoing compliance monitoring.
We re-verify listings annually and investigate any community reports of non-compliance. Restaurants that start using any banned ingredient are removed immediately.
What We Stand For
We don't allow partial compliance. If a kitchen uses any banned ingredient in any dish, they don't get listed.
Every verified restaurant has documented proof on file. We show you exactly what they cook with.
Clean food shouldn't be a luxury. We're building the world's most comprehensive clean-eating directory.
Our community nominates restaurants, reports violations, and helps keep the directory honest.
